Dubai's Moon (Chanel Resort 2015)

I couldn't help to seek refuge in the saying "better late than never" and go ahead and make a blogpost about Chanel's Cruise Collection even though it launched two weeks ago. Since 2006, Karl has been pleasing us with the most exquisite locations all over the world (New York's Grand Central station, LAX Airport, Raleigh Hotel in Miami, Venice's Lido beach,  Patisserie Sénéquier in Saint-Tropez, Cap Eden Roc Hotel in Antibes, Cannes, Tres Fontaines gardens in Versailles palace and Loewen Cluster in Singapur, in that order) and putting up shows that always lived up to (and beyond) our expectations.

Nowadays, most people's (and I say most because there might be some people who will just think of a dictionary) mental image of the word 'opulence' is embodied by the dreamy city of Dubai: malls bigger than your own town, artificial islands, skyscrapers that rotate, twirl, change colours and do such a big repertory of things that you'd think they are transformers, oil wells around every other corner, etc.

Don't even try to think that the facility where the show was held was built in the blink of an eye or on a passing whim of Karl's: Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was this place. I've read that Karl started negotiating with Kor Hotels about 4 years ago, and agreed to build a humble complex of connected island-stores, a good number of residential houses, and 3 luxury hotels on a nice little corner of Dubai's artificial island. I must say such impressive and thrilling projects, where the boundaries of art, fashion and architecture (and plain good taste), make me seriously reconsider, at least for a few moments, taking up the architecture career...

Let's warm up with a bit of backstage (this type of pictures are, without a doubt, my absolute favorite)

You know you're going hard at makeup when you incorporate gold leafing into the mix. Seriously though, models at this show looked like walking works of art.

The industry was needing some serious oriental inspiration, and Chanel was quick to pick it up. An interview said that most prints were inspired in tile motifs from Spain "when it was Arabic" (nice mention to Al-Andalus Karl, i see what you did there...) and Northern Africa.

Fine jewelry/plain jewelry was another big cornerstone of this collection where fake items camouflaged themselves with genuine pieces amidst a cluster of exquisiteness. Karl says that Dubai was famous, around the 30s, for its big pearl industry. That obviously was a nice bonding point between this Middle East oasis and Chanel.

Tweed took on all kind of shapes of suits and tunics.

Another trend worth of mention: harem pants. Sheer, patterned, under dresses, under "lampshade tunics"... this definitely reminded me of the oriental fever Paris went through during its  Belle Époque when Sergei Diaghilev's famous Russian Ballets arrived with their intricate, exotic and eccentric indumentary designed by Léon Bakst. Even recognizing this possible inspiration, Chanel's proposal feels brand new and the quality and richness of fabrics and materials is out of this world.

Last but not least (I always try to save for last la crème de la crème) there is that not so indirect yet really fun reference to Dubai's main source of humble richness: the quilted oil can-shaped bag. The lucky model that got the chance to sport this baby was Crystal Renn (who, by the way, happens to have a pretty good eye for photography; proof of it are the shots of Dubai she posted on her Instagram account). The question that now haunts my mind is, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SPOT CARA DELEVINGNE WEARING THIS AT SOME PARTY OR AIRPORT? Shall we bet on it?

Anyways, you should take into account this was just a very succint, general outline (from my personal point of view) of 83-look collection. If you're hungry for more, here yo go... bon appétit!
